MESOPOTAMIA. Edessa. Macrinus, 217-218. Tetradrachm (Billon, 28 mm, 12.18 g, 12 h). [Α]Υ Κ•Μ•ΟΠЄΛ•CЄ•ΜΑΚΡЄΙΝΟC Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Macrinus to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΔΗΜΑ[Ρ•Χ•ЄΞ ΥΠΑ]ΤΟC Eagle with spread wings standing facing, head to right and holding wreath in beak; between legs, shrine. Prieur 852. Struck somewhat off center and with some flan faults, otherwise, good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.


As noted by Prieur, the portrait of Macrinus in the earliest issues from Edessa is still clearly reminiscent of that of his predecessor, Caracalla.
